What is Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is surgery that changes the cosmetic appearance of the nose. Patients who desire rhinoplasty may simply wish for a cosmetic improvement in the nose they were born with, or they may have had a trauma to the nose that changed the shape or position. Dr. Rodman is double-board-certified in both facial plastic surgery and ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgery. This double training makes her an expert in noses. Dr. Rodman is always keeping both form and function in mind when performing rhinoplasty. This ensures that the result is a nose that breathes well and looks beautiful.

Additional Reading

A rhinoplasty can help patients who have issues with their nose cosmetically or functionally. Common conditions that may be treated using rhinoplasty include a nose that is too big and/or wide, a bump on the bridge of the nose, a drooping tip, a broken nose, or a deviated septum. Dr. Rodman will analyze your face and comment on how your nose might be improved to bring your features into better balance. Dr. Rodman’s philosophy is that the perfect nose is “a nose that no one notices.” A natural-appearing nose does not draw attention and allows your eyes and lips to be the features that stand out and shine. A nose that is too big or too small and not in balance with the face will stand out. An ideal nose is one that harmonizes with the other facial features. Dr. Rodman will listen to your concerns, cosmetic and functional, and develop a plan with you. Patient input and clear communication is one of the keys to success! You will be able to see computer imaging to get an idea of what you will look like after surgery.

Who is a good candidate?

A good candidate for rhinoplasty is someone who is healthy with no serious medical conditions or illnesses, who does not smoke, and who has realistic aesthetic goals. In your consult with Dr. Rodman, she will discuss your aesthetic goals and help guide you to a nose that fits your face and appears natural.

Alternative Procedures

For patients who want to fix a hump on their nose or make minor tweaks, an alternative to a rhinoplasty could be injectable dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can help with the side profile of your nose, helping to blend in or fix a higher dorsal hump. This is sometimes known as a liquid rhinoplasty. Dr. Rodman specializes in dermal fillers, injectables and liquid rhinoplasty and she makes sure that every patient has an even and symmetrical face.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

At Face Forward Houston Rhinoplasty is done under general anesthesia and typically takes three hours, but this depends on each patient’s individual case. Everything you need to know will be explained in your pre-operative appointment: how to prepare before surgery, what to expect the morning of surgery, what is needed to be brought with you, and how to care for your incisions after your procedure.

Procedure Day: What to Expect

A rhinoplasty is usually done as an outpatient procedure, and patients go home the same day. You will likely be bruised and swollen for the first week after surgery. Expect to limit activity to light tasks for the first week. After their rhinoplasty Houston patients are usually scheduled to come in the day after surgery to answer any post-operative questions and to have incisions examined. There will be tapes and a cast on your nose after surgery. There may be soft silastic splints in the nose after surgery. These will remain on for six to seven days after your procedure. Dr. Rodman does not use the yards and yards of packing that some patients remember or have heard of from patients who underwent rhinoplasty many years ago. Anything in the nose is soft and flexible and is removed at the post-op visit on day six to seven.

Rhinoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Patients who work in jobs that are not physically demanding (i.e., working at a desk) may return to work in one week. Patients who have more physical demands at their job (i.e., waiting tables, construction) may benefit from at least 10 to 12 days off.

As an athlete herself, Dr. Rodman understands the importance of staying in a fitness routine. She understands that working out is a part of wellbeing and wants patients to get back to “normal” as soon as possible. A rhinoplasty does not have to compromise your fitness goals, but patients should follow the guidelines below. Patients are encouraged to walk from day one post op, at least around their house every two to three hours. Longer walks are encouraged after the patient feels stronger in the later days of the first week. Week 2 patients may resume light exercise such as stationary biking, elliptical machine, and weights at less than 50%. It is important that patients remember that they are still healing and will fatigue much more quickly than before surgery. Light activity is okay, but patients should listen to their bodies and slow down or stop if needed. Week 3 patients may increase activity and resume all steady-state cardio (jogging, biking) and slowly increase weights to 60 to 70% of normal. Week 4 patients can continue to increase pace and weight of workouts, and work towards pre op capacity. Patients may ramp up activity but should be cautious of extreme intensity (max set, powerlifting, sprinting at full capacity) and anything putting the head upside down (downward dog in yoga, handstands, some types of dance). This will likely cause discomfort and throbbing at this stage. Patients may shower and hop in a pool to cool off, but no prolonged swimming or soaking in water for six weeks.

Each rhinoplasty procedure performed by Dr. Rodman is customized based on the patient’s anatomy and aesthetic goals. The price of a rhinoplasty procedure is affected by the total surgery time, the techniques required, and whether you combine the procedure with additional facial plastic surgeries.
