Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal treatment. A trained electrologist inserts a probe into the hair follicle. A pulse of energy moves down the probe to destroy the hair follicle at the root. The follicle damage prevents hair from growing, and the existing hair will be extracted. Electrolysis was founded in 1875 by Charles Michel as a treatment for ingrown eyelashes (trichiasis). To date, electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal.
Providing Proven Permanent Results
Laser hair removal can provide hair reduction and can be good for hair reduction across large areas. However, laser hair removal is not permanent and will require a lifetime of “touch-ups” Further, the laser reacts to the hair's pigment, and it only works if there is a contrast between the pigment of the hair and the pigment of the skin. Laser hair will not work on light colored hair such as blond, red, white, or gray hairs. It is also not recommended for dark hair in patients with dark skin. A laser also does not work on fine hair, and very thick hairs (such as beard hairs) are often resistant to treatment. Electrolysis treatments will work on all hair types & pigments while providing proven permanent results.
Galvanic is the original method of electrolysis used for decades that started it all. The galvanic process uses direct current to cause a chemical reaction where water and salt molecules break down and regroup to form lye, caustic soda (NaOH). This process destroys the cells & tissue that are responsible for hair growth. Galvanic has become less popular in the mid to late 20th century as it can be a slower process than the alternative methods.
Thermolysis was developed in 1924 by Henri Bordier. Thermolysis sends an alternating current to the probe to create heat and destroy the hair follicle. This has become the favored method because it can be very fast and effective.
Blend was granted a patent in 1948 and was co-developed by Henri E. St. Pierre and Arthur Hinkel. The blend uses a combination of heat (thermolysis) to speed up the chemical reaction (galvanic) process. The blend is still slower than thermolysis alone. However, it may make the treatment more comfortable.

Patients compare the sensation of the electrolysis needle to the light snapping of a rubber band on their skin. After your visit, you can expect redness, mild swelling, and soreness in the treated area, but you should feel ready to resume most of your normal activities immediately.
Maintaining Your Electrolysis Results
Redness, itching, and soreness are normal in the first 48 hours after electrolysis. You may also have small pinpoint scabs on the treated follicles. Follow aftercare instructions carefully and keep the area clean as it heals. We will help you determine the best course of treatment for your goals and schedule you for follow-up appointments as needed until you have achieved full hair removal from the treatment area.
Electrolysis offers permanent hair removal, so say goodbye to plucking, shaving, or waxing unwanted hair from your face, bikini area, or elsewhere! Although you may need multiple sessions to achieve your desired results, these results provide a lasting alternative to other less effective forms of hair removal.
We use an Apilus xCell Pur that sets a new standard for patient comfort compared to other permanent hair removal options. We also can offer a lidocaine cream with your treatment. You would need to arrive 30 - 45 minutes before your appointment so we can apply it to the desired areas. You can also opt for nerve blocks for an additional fee. These nerve blocks can numb an entire area. This is an excellent option for patients that wish to have a large area cleared. Our methods of numbing help even the most sensitive patient to be comfortable during the treatment.
The average patient will need to be seen every two weeks for up to 3 months to get one pulse to every hair that is growing in an area. The hair that is growing today is approximately 25% of all hair that can grow. The best results will be achieved by those who are committed to a journey to be hair free in the desired area they are seeking to clear.
There is a very small risk of infection or scarring, but electrolysis is a safe procedure overall. Electrolysis will likely cause temporary redness, tenderness & swelling that typically subsides within 24 - 48 hours.
Your cost will depend on the extent of your treatment and will generally depend on how large the area is that needs treatment. A client's age, current prescription medication, what hair removal methods have been used previously and how much time will be required to clear that are taken into consideration. All of this, along with each client's goals & budget, will play a role in the overall cost. Schedule your consultation today to receive an estimate for your permanent hair removal journey.
