It has been shown in several studies that the brow and the upper â…“ of the face are the most important facial characteristic in identifying gender. One of the most important differences between male and female faces is the projection of the brow bone and orbital rims. For patients who want to appear masculine, adding volume to the brow is very important. Volume can be added centrally, between the eyebrows, and laterally, over the eyes.
In facial masculinization surgery, Dr. Rodman will augment the brow bone and orbital rims with a custom implant. This implant is designed for each patient’s anatomy based on the results of a specialized CT scan. The brow bone implant augments both the orbital rims and the brow bone, which is the bone between the two eyebrows. It can be made as big or small as the patient desires and is made to fit perfectly into each patient’s bony skeleton.
The implant is placed endoscopically, meaning that a camera is employed to see the forehead bone under the skin and place the brow bone implant. Because telescopic cameras are used to see the surgical field, this means there are no large visible cuts on the forehead. A small incision in the hairline is needed to insert the implant, and two very small incisions are placed right above or below the eyebrows to secure the implant.
Eyebrow Position
After the implant is placed, the eyebrow and forehead soft tissue is mobile, and Dr. Rodman is able to adjust the position of the brow. For most Houston brow bone augmentation patients, adjusting the eyebrow to sit right on the orbital rim gives the most traditionally masculine appearance.
The result is a stronger, more defined, masculine brow.
During your consultation for brow bone augmentation Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Rodman will create a custom surgical plan. Patients who choose brow bossing augmentation as part of that plan will need a special CT scan, which the Face Forward Staff will order. Once that scan is done, a virtual surgical planning session will be scheduled, where your custom forehead implant will be designed. After it is complete, the full design will be sent to you for approval. Once you approve the design, the implant will be created and shipped in a sterile package. This process usually takes 3-4 weeks after the CT scan is completed.
